Elite Force on the PC was a Trektastic first-person shooter set in the Voyager universe. The PS2 version is a direct port of the original game and unfortunately it’s lost something in translation. The story plays like an episode of the hit show. The ill-fated USS Voyager answers a distress call only to find out that it’s a carefully prepared trap which transports them to an alien ship graveyard from which there appears to be no escape. Their predicament forces Voyager’s command crew to create the Hazard Team, a specialist squad charged with the task of exploring the other ships stranded in the mysterious vortex and discovering a way home. This is standard first-person shooter fare with a Star Trek twist. You take on the role of Alex (or Alexandra) Munroe and get to wander about various sci-fi backdrops with ever increasing firepower. The story is well done and really feels like being in an episode of Star Trek and the weapons are imaginative enough to keep you interested. There’s the usual array of puzzles along the way, some surprises and you get to take on The Borg. But what is disappointing in this PS2 version is that there isn’t anything really new about it. Graphically it’s a shadow of its former PC self with the backgrounds looking pixilated and washed out and the load times are interminable. The enemy AI is also less than stellar with quite a few putting up less fight than a bag full of Tribbles… on vallium. Basically the PC version was so immersive that this console adaptation just doesn’t do it justice; it’s not bad, it just doesn’t set your phaser to stun. FPS fans will find that the genre has moved on too much for Elite Force to make any kind of impact and it’s really only going to appeal to true blue Star Trek fans who will probably already have played

Developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio behind critically acclaimed titles like From Dust, Beyond Good & Evil and, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, ZombiU puts players in the middle of London circa 2012, where an outbreak has infected the population, destroying their humanity and turning them into mindless monsters preying on the flesh of the few remaining survivors. This fear-fueled first-person shooter invites takes all the horror, chaos and tension found in the best of the horror genre and adds original interactive elements, including a unique death mechanic that puts players in the body of a different survivor each time they die, allowing them to track and take down their old, infected characters, recover their equipment and see if they can stay alive just a little bit longer this time.

ZombiU showcases the innovative features of the Nintendo Wii U Controller and creates new game experiences not possible on other consoles. The Nintendo Wii U Controller serves as the player’s ultimate survival kit, called the “Bug Out Bag.” The Bug Out Bag is a backpack containing all the maps, tools, weapons and supplies that players can scavenge from the limited resources available in the devastated cityscape. ZombiU also will use the Nintendo Wii U Controller’s touch screen, gyroscope and camera to create a tactile connection between gamers and the in-game world. Finally, ZombiU features a distinctive multiplayer adversarial mode that allows one player to take on the role of “Zombie Master,” spawning and controlling enemies from a top-down view on the Nintendo Wii U GamePad while the second player fights for survival on the big screen in first-person shooter view with a Wii wireless classic controller.

DOOM

DOOM
Rating: 4
DOOM was a milestone in the first-person shooter genre and it has been released by id Software in 1993. It was available for many platforms. I know that I missed a lot of secrets and so on, but it was several years ago I played it the last time, and I just wanted to show the basic gameplay. So, I hope you like this video anyway 😀 As I noticed in some comments, the music may sound different from what you used to hear. Well, in this video, it is the original Adlib/SoundBlaster music using YM3812/YMF262 chip instructions (also known as OPL2). Later, after Windows 95 came out, most sound cards used wavetable synthesizers instead, so the music may vary vastly among each other. I guess, people who played this in the early years can confirm this :) Watch my channel for more about DOSBox!

Three brothers, known as the Serpent Riders for their monstrous steeds, have used their immense magical powers to turn the seven kings of Parthoris into mindless puppets. The kings, in turn, led their subjects in doing the Serpent Riders’ bidding. However, the Sidhe elves are immune to the Serpent Riders’ spells and had no allegiance to any of the seven kings; the Serpent Riders thus declared the Sidhe as heretics and launched a campaign of genocide against them. The Sidhe were in possession of seven candles, each tied to a natural power of the world as well as that of one king. In desperation, the Sidhe’s elders extinguished these candles, destroying both the kings’ armies and weakening the elves’ own powers in the process. Taking advantage of the elves’ weakened state, the disciples of the Serpent Riders struck against the elves and killed the elders. Afterwards, the Sidhe went into hiding. One, however, sets out in search of D’Sparil, the weakest of the three Serpent Riders and the only one remaining in Parthoris.

Set in a not too distant future where megalithic corporations control vast, brutal military forces and violence rules the streets, Devastation has you pitting your wits against 20 single-player missions as you try to avoid getting caught or killed.

The story sounds like the rest: You play Flynn Haskell, the leader of a local chapter of the resistance who’s charged with defeating the surrounding enemies and becoming the leader everyone knows he can be. The game’s based on a heavily modified Unreal gaming engine and the majority of gamers will recognise the interface straight away.

The graphic detail allows for rag-doll deaths and the sort of interactive features we have come to expect from the average first-person shooter, such as the ability to pick up and throw chairs. You have over 30 weapons to keep you occupied, including a trusty knife and the odd bit of 2×4 that you find lying around. Those wanting more than the 25 hours offered by the single-player game can choose from four different multiplayer modes.

This is nothing special but if you are looking for a first-person shooter to while away some time then this will suffice–just don’t expect it to be the next Half-Life. —Jason Denwood

The first-person shooter genre has grown by intermittent leaps since the days of Wolfenstein 3-D. Huge advances in 3-D graphics, sound, and processor speed, as well as the addition of network multiplayer gameplay have favoured the genre, and now, Red Faction‘s “Geo Mod” technology promises to take the first-person shooter to new heights.

Geo Mod, which is short for “geometry modification,” allows formerly permanent elements of a game’s background to change in real-time. For example, if a player were to shoot a rocket at a stone wall, the wall could crumble or have a hole blown clean through. The best that previous games could do is to change the texture of the wall and leave it looking charred.

While most gamers would applaud any advance in realistic graphics, Geo Mod looks to also influence the way first-person shooters are played. If the world of the first-person shooter can be altered, the game makers point out, then the world itself becomes a weapon at your disposal. More than just shooting opponents through walls, players should be able to cause a ceiling to collapse on an opponent. With the right tools, players will be able to destroy bunkers, block escape routes, and otherwise flush players out of their well-defended positions.

Obviously, it’s Geo Mod that has gamers so excited for this game, so other game components might be easy to overlook in the excitement. Red Faction‘s story is set on a Martian mining colony, where workers, buffeted by abusive guards and a deadly plague, revolt. In the single-player game, you’ll run around the tunnels of Mars in a first person view and use 15 weapons to destructively deform the environment as well as your foes. You can also hijack land, sea, and air vehicles to aid your revolt. –Porter B. Hall
