The Wii plays host to another totally unique game as you hunt for the electric Eledees with a gravity gun that can send everything from teapots to family cars flying. Making a mess was never so much fun.

Konami have been one of the most reticent of the big Japanese publishers, in being coaxed away from just supporting the PlayStation. But with their first game on the Wii there’s no sign of Solid Snake or Silent Hill. Instead they’ve created something entirely original, although its influences are as diverse as Pikmin and Half-Life 2.

The game has you collecting the cute little Eledees that are hidden in various locations around the levels. In order to coax them out you have a gravity gun with which you can manipulate the environment, from opening drawers and cupboards to flinging around lawnmowers and dunking basketballs. The more Eledees you collect, the heavier the objects your can move, from pots and pans in the beginning, to whole houses by the end of a level. As well as just being able to lift heavier objects, gradually charging up your gun allows you to power electrical equipment. Stick a chicken in the microwave or start the garden sprinklers and dozens of Eledees are revealed. This leads to some surprisingly complex puzzles and ensures almost everything in a level is interactive to some degree.

The game has a multiplayer mode, with four people competing to collect the most Eledees they can find. However only one person gets to control the camera (via the nunchuck) which is bound to lead to arguments. – HARRISON DENT

With the popularity of Half Life growing month by month and Counterstrike the add-on, fuelling this further, many hard-core gamers are turning their talents to developing add-ons to the games. One keen Half Life player decided to do just that, but when he showed Valve, Half Life’s developers, they were so stunned that they have released it as a standalone game.

Based, therefore, on the Half Life engine, this game has all the intensity of Aliens vs Predator, the storyline of Half Life and the AI of Soldier of Fortune, showing them that Gunman Chronicles is how a game should be don.

With the introduction of some new weapons, the ability to drive vehicles and dinosaurs roaming the countryside, you’ve got a game that takes the mantle forward for Valve.

The storyline, like Half Life, is very consuming and you can easily get sucked in to the realm that is The Gunman Chronicles. Although the game has some great niceties, like dinosaurs that attack you or the bad guys while you are in the middle of a fire fight–very handy if they eat them rather than you–the games weapon system can be at times slightly awkward to the unfamiliar player.

While most games offer a secondary fire to weapons, Gunman Chronicles tries to take this a step further by offering three of four. Options-wise, this is great, but you can’t help but feel that an extra hand would come in handy sometimes to access the additional weapons.

Putting this minor point aside, if you are a fan of Half Life or the first-person shooter–and lets face it, who isn’t?–then Gunman Chronicles is going to be right up your street for the next big challenge.

If, though, the genre is slightly unfamiliar to you, although a great place to start, a better option would be to try something a little less complicated, like Half Life and work your way up. —Stuart Miles

There can be few titles in gaming history that have been more eagerly anticipated (and more consistently delayed) than Half-Life 2. The original Half-Life was one of the most influential first-person shoot-’em-ups ever made, with its amazing story-led gameplay and incredible artificial intelligence, and this sequel promises to follow in the same proud tradition with a game that will set the pace for years to come.

As with the first game you play resourceful scientist Gordon Freeman as he attempts to fight back against an alien invasion from another dimension. In the years that have passed since the first game the world governments have become ever more despotic in the face of the threat and Gordon once again finds himself fighting both human and alien foes.

Even more so than the original, what sets Half-Life 2 apart from the rest is its incredible technology–the preview code we’ve seen so far displays stunningly realistic graphics, amazing real world physics and highly adaptive AI. In combining all three elements, the game offers an almost infinite variety. One minute you find yourself being hunted down by Special Forces, using furniture to block doorways and throwing grenades to dislodge container crates and squish unsuspecting bad guys, the next you’ll be stalking zombies through an abandoned village or fighting giant War of the Worlds styled tripods with the resistance movement and using a tractor beam gun to capture chunks of masonry and fling it at your enemies.

Half-Life 2 allows all this and more and could very well turn out to be the first game to actually exceed its hype, never mind just live up to it. Here’s hoping.–David Jenkins

This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

If you don’t know what Doom is, you must be one of those weirdoes that had something better to do with their time in the summer of 1993 than play PC games. Doom is one of the most influential games of all time and popularised the whole first-person shoot-’em-up genre, and is thus the spiritual grandaddy of classics such as Quake, Half-Life, GoldenEye and even the recent Halo. Indeed, the major draw for this portable version is the cloying wave of nostalgia it brings to hardcore gamers as they set about the hordes of hell with a shotgun and a chain saw. This is an almost-perfect conversion of the original (or at least the original running on an average speed PC of the time) that even manages to include a four-player death match and a cooperative two-player mode.

The music is the same, the level design is the same and best of all the gameplay is the same, with strafing working surprisingly well on the GBA’s shoulder buttons. The only problem with the game, other than the inexplicable use of green blood even though it’s got a 15 rating, is that the graphics can be a bit jerky in places. Which is presumably why the developers have had to ditch the two huge end-of-level bosses from the second and third episodes. In general, though, this is a technical tour de force that will have any remaining GBA doubters reaching for their wallets. —David Jenkins
