It’s easy to see why there was so much fighting amongst the console manufacturers to try and make this game a format exclusive. Where early launch titles may have disappointed this game not only looks like a next generation game but it plays like it too. Taken at face value the story casts you as an Arabic fighter in 1191, out to assassinate the nine Western leaders of the Third Crusade. There is more to the story than that though making it more than simple historical adventure it first seems.Since it’s developed by many of the same team behind Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, it’s no surprise to find the game using many of the same ideas. With the bold claim that you can climb on or over anything in the game world that sticks out more than two inches, this allows incredible freedom of movement, with a style of acrobatics heavily influenced by Parkour/free running. The game also innovates in terms of combat, with each of the face buttons controlling a different area of the body, rather like a marionette. As such one button controls the feet, one your open hand, one your weapon hand and the other your head.As an assassin stealth plays an important role in the game too, but here it’s often a case of hiding in plain sight as you mill around inside large crowds of people. Everyone will react to you realistically though, so if you go around pushing people out of the way, or even killing them, the crowd will react and report you. With stunning graphics and genuinely innovative gameplay this is destined to be one of the most important releases of the year.HARRISON DENT

Written by active U.S. Tier 1 Operators while deployed overseas and inspired by real world threats, Medal of Honor Warfighter™ delivers an aggressive, gritty, and authentic experience that puts gamers in the boots of today’s most precise and disciplined warrior. Medal of Honor Warfighter is an up close and personal look at today’s battlefield and the fight against the ongoing global terror threat.

Following on the heels of 2010’s Medal of Honor that took the game series out of World War II and introduced players to today’s most elite U.S. warriors, Medal of Honor Warfighter takes players out of Afghanistan to continue to experience gameplay missions with a dotted line to real world incursions. This is Tier 1 on a global scale, featuring real world hotspots and international Tier 1 Operators in Multiplayer.

Medal of Honor Warfighter tells the story of U.S. Tier 1 Operator, “Preacher” as he returns home from overseas only to find his family torn apart from years of deployment. Trying to pick up the pieces to salvage what remains of his marriage, Preacher is reminded of what he’s fighting for – family. But when an extremely deadly explosive (PETN) penetrates civilian borders and his two worlds collide, Preacher and his fellow teammates are sent in to solve the problem. They take the fight to the enemy and do whatever it takes to protect their loved ones from harm.

Super Monkey Ball
List Price: £19.99
Your Price: £29.00- Super Monkey Ball

Super Monkey Ball does exactly what it says on the box: it features a monkey, in a ball, and it is absolutely super. This rather odd game is similar to the classic Marble Madness, except that instead of controlling a marble through a maze-like course you control the course and must tilt and rotate it to get the cheeky little simian to the exit.

Ironically, the Gamecube’s best launch game is also its least impressive graphically. It’s not ugly, by any means, but the graphics are mostly purely functional and subservient to the gameplay. It may sound simple and repetitive but Super Monkey Ball is pretty much the dictionary definition of addictive, perfectly balancing the intense frustration at failing to complete a course with the absolute desire to have “just one more go”. To make matters worse the later courses are so fiendishly difficult it’ s as if Beelzebub himself has risen up from hell and designed a puzzle game.

The single player mode is maddeningly addictive, but it’s the four-player larks, either on the standard puzzle courses or through a bunch of wacky mini-games including monkey bowling and monkey fight, that mark Super Monkey Ball as a true gaming classic. Its lack of showy graphics may unfairly limit it to cult status–just make sure you’re part of the cult.–David Jenkins

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (PS2 Gameplay)

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 (PS2 Gameplay)
Rating: 0
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 (PS2) – Skater: Tony Hawk – Location: Foundry This game saw the introduction of the revert, a trick that enabled vert combos to be tied together with a manual, by tapping a button when landing in a quarterpipe. This allowed for much longer combos than in the previous two games, where landing in a quarterpipe would finish a combo. The game also added hidden combos. These were variations on standard tricks that could be performed as grab, flip, lip, or grind tricks. For example, double-tapping the kickflip button would, naturally, make the character perform a double kickflip. This system would later be refined in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4. The game stood out in the franchise for being the first title to have online capabilities. Users could connect directly to other players online on the PlayStation 2 version even prior to the launch of the network adapter, with a USB Ethernet adapter. Due to the shut down of most Sony servers the game is no longer playable with others online, except for via programs like XLink Kai. And the game had brand new tricks such as the cannonball, wrap around, fingerflip, del mar indy and a brand new airwalk.

While Acclaim obviously hopes to launch a new character into the video game pantheon with Vexx, it would be wrong to expect another cuddly sprite who would be at home in a Looney Tunes cartoon. There is something decidedly twisted about Vexx. It might have something to do with his witnessing of the murder of his grandfather. After discovering hidden Astani war talons–which permanently attach to Vexx’s arms–he is charged with avenging his grandfather’s death, freeing his fellow villagers from slavery and ridding the universe of the evil Dark Yabu.

Playing as Vexx, you collect Wraith hearts. By gathering their energy, you power up the central hub that in turn opens doors to different worlds–from ice-encrusted wastelands and lush forests to hilly deserts and underwater oases. The graphics and music in each new world and in the many miniworlds hidden within are often breathtaking. At times, you easily become distracted, taking a break from world-saving responsibility to hop into a pool for a swim or perch on top of some pole just to get a good look around.

The controls are fairly straightforward, although occasionally a near-impossible move sequence is needed to propel Vexx up to the next wobbling platform. The puzzles that lead to each heart can be challenging, if not downright frustrating, but there are enough available that you can always go and play somewhere else. There are 81 hearts scattered throughout the game, but only 60 are required to fight Dark Yabu. The creatures in each world are easy to slaughter and only a nuisance if they attack at the wrong time or en masse. Those seeking more of a challenge can hop onto the sundial in each level and twist it from day to night. This not only produces cool graphical and musical effects, but brings out a meaner breed of creepy-crawly.

The only real defect is the third-person camera, which at times simply refuses to cooperate–but this is more than made up for with the thrill of fighting a sumo wrestler about 15 times your size, complete with his jiggling rolls of fat and deep-throated chortle. Nothing beats smacking him in the butt until he looms up on his tippy toes and falls over. –D.J. Morel

As first-person shooters go, Rainbow Six is to PlayStation what GoldenEye 007 is to the Nintendo 64: the most innovative and intriguing title of its kind for the platform. Borrowed from Tom Clancy’s novel of the same name, Rainbow Six offers a fascinating first-person adventure through lush worlds and highly detailed environments that have never been seen on gaming consoles. But don’t stop to smell the roses too often or you’ll end up staring down the business end of an oncoming Stinger missile.

You command an elite anti-terrorism force through a series of stealth and action missions. Sometimes you will need to sneak through a foreign embassy in the dark with your night vision goggles on, while other times you’ll need to launch a full-on weapons attack on your enemies. The game does both types of missions well, but you’ll have to spend some time planning with your team before you start each level. Plotting out missions in advance and positioning team members lends a unique real-time strategy feel to the already excellent shooter aspect of the game.

As the team leader, you are solely responsible for making sure each mission goes well. Direct and protect your squad, save any hostages who might be hanging around, and accomplish your main mission objectives. Good luck. –Bill Hutchens
