You might be forgiven for thinking that Quantum Redshift is a 1970s science fiction film, but it’s actually the latest futuristic driving game from Microsoft. If you remember the classic PlayStation title Wipeout then this is a similar concept: you race a load of high-powered vehicles round a track picking up power-ups and trying to run every other participant off the road. If you win you simply go on to the next level.

Like SSX Tricky, in Quantum Redshift you pick a racer rather than a vehicle and each one has their own background. Initially there are eight to choose from with the option to unlock more the further you progress into the game. Each character has their own ship, choice of weapons and their nemesis who will try their hardest to run them off the track.

There are several modes to choose from: tournament is organised into a series of four leagues, from novice through to Redshift. There is also a head-to-head multiplayer mode, with a maximum of four players in split-screen. Graphically the game looks great with the water effects in the wet races really showing off the Xbox’s superior pixel pushing power.

The controls are very pick up and play, and although the game is fast paced, it’s not so hard as to be frustrating. And then there are the weapons. When you win you are awarded points depending on how you performed; the time taken to complete the track, the damage you cause and your overall style all combine to result in your overall score. You use money to upgrade your weapons and ship, usually consisting of such weapons of mass destruction as guided missiles and projectiles. You can recharge these by picking up orbs on the track. All in all Quantum Redshift is a very playable game with some great touches and more than enough adrenalin fuelled action to keep even the most demanding speed freaks happy. —Linden Thomas

The original Halo was one of that rare breed of games that was so compelling it persuaded millions of people to go out and buy a new console just to play it. Without Halo the Xbox would probably have failed instantly, which gives this long awaited sequel an incredible amount to live up to. So far relatively little has been seen of the game but what has been revealed seems to surpass the original with startling ease.

Widely regarded as the best first-person shoot-’em-up ever made for a home console, Halo 2 follows in its forebear’s footsteps with a perfect blend of single and multiplayer action. The former offers far more variety than the first game as the battle is brought to Earth and the incredible advances in the game’s AI, as well as just its graphics, become immediately obvious. There are now a lot more friendly troops to help you out and the evil Covenant invaders have become even more organised and intelligent.

In the all-important multiplayer mode, the most significant change is that you can now play the game online on Xbox Live against anyone in the world. This is the feature fans have been clamouring for and it’s supplemented by new gameplay features such as the ability to steal vehicles, man fixed gun emplacements and play as the bad guys. If you don’t yet own an Xbox, Halo 2 is all the reason you need to change that.—Harrison Dent

The World Is Not Enough offers a satisfying experience in terms of both graphics and gameplay. You play the part of 007, and the action is viewed from a first-person perspective. As each level begins you’re given a set of objectives by M and these have to be completed before you can proceed. The tasks mainly involve shooting as many bad guys as possible with a variety of satisfyingly chunky weaponry, but there are also skiing, driving, gambling (one of the most fun) and stealth levels, with the latter utilising some neat gadgetry provided by John Cleese’s R. The game follows the plot of the film very closely, with 10 levels being linked by extensive movie footage. An experienced gamer will not have too many problems finishing TWINE in a few hours, and the extensive violence makes this game unsuitable for younger players, but most James Bond fans will find much to entertain them in this diverting romp. —Michael Bartley

While Tomorrow Never Dies presents the variety and intrigue one would expect from the beloved licensed-to-kill, Martini-sippin’ spy, it would have benefited from a bit more polishing. Don’t expect this game to be on par with the games and movies that preceded it; in fact, if you’re looking for a GoldenEye-like experience for the PlayStation, you’d be much better off with WWII period piece Medal of Honor. Tomorrow Never Dies uses an auto target mode, but it’s far too restrictive to be of use here, requiring players to stand still in order to keep the target locked. The game loyally follows the film, but when the action intensifies–such as a hot pursuit on skis, or flying a nuclear warhead-laden jet out of a hot zone–players are forced to either relinquish control entirely or have minimal input. Gadgets from Bond’s old pal Q are too sparsely used, and the absence of any multiplayer mode seals this game’s fate as a small diversion rather than a stellar accomplishment. —Jeff Young

Utilising their exclusive licence to the FIA World Rally Championship, and making big improvements to the game too, Sony have thrown a sizeable gauntlet down to their rivals with World Rally Championship II Extreme. From the off, it’s clear much work has been done. The graphics, for instance, are excellent, from the detailed cars to the various rugged terrains you race over. And as with most rallying games, it’s a meaty challenge, particularly in the early stages as you get used to things, and towards the end, as you try to win everything. The option exists to dive in for a quick race, but the real dividends are reaped when you take on the WRC mode.

Said mode pits you into a full season, with multi-day and multi-stage races that take place right across the world over varying terrain. As such, the game calls not just for good driving skills–although they’re understandably vital–but also a tactical approach as you adjust facets such as your gears, brakes and tyres to suit the forthcoming challenge.

And when it gets down to the action, World Rally Championship II Extreme delivers. It’s presents an enthralling, if testing, series of races, which can also be run in multiplayer mode. Perhaps it’s still a little way behind its main rival, the Colin McRae Rally series, but it’s a genuinely enjoyable challenge for the more experienced rally game fan. It’s less forgiving than Mr McRae for those new to the genre, but then this is a serious rally game for serious rally game fans, and they would argue it’s all the better for it. It requires dedication, practice and persistence from those who beat it, but they’ll certainly have got strong value for money by the time they get to the end. —Simon Brew

Want to play a first-person shooter on your console? Tired of there being no proper GoldenEye sequel? Wishing that you could play the part of a Barbary ape in the Wild West? TimeSplitters 2 is the game for you if you answered “yes” to any of these questions.

When Rare made GoldenEye for the N64 in 1997 they created the best first-person shoot-’em-up the world had ever seen and, arguably, has ever seen to this day. Many of the geniuses behind the game left Rare shortly after to set-up their own company, Free Radical; their first game was the rather rushed (in time for the PS2’s launch) TimeSplitters but this sequel is polished to perfection and easily one of the best games of the year.

One of the main problems with the original TimeSplitters was its awful single-player mode, but this has been totally revamped for the sequel with a proper story mode, all-new time zones and weapons and absolutely mountains of unlockable hidden extras. Thankfully they’ve kept the wicked sense of humour from the first game, but there’s also a lot more strategy for solo players this time around, including an amusing homage to GoldenEye‘s Arkangelsk Dam level as well as pastiches of other games and films scattered throughout the game.

The real reason for TimeSplitters 2‘s greatness, though, is the multiplayer mode. This is GoldenEye to the nth degree, with superbly designed levels, tons of weapons and all sorts of tricks and gimmicks such as remote control gun turrets and invisibility pills. It may lack the epic scope of Halo but in multiplayer mode at least this is a lot more fun–and fun, as The Beatles never said, is all you need. —David Jenkins
