n Super Mario Kart the player takes control of one of eight Mario series characters, each with differing capabilities.[6] In single player mode players can race against computer controlled characters in multi-race cups over three difficulty levels. During the races, offensive and speed boosting power-ups can be used to gain an advantage. Alternatively players can race against the clock in a Time Trial mode.[7] In multi-player mode two players can simultaneously take part in the cups or can race against each other one-on-one in Match Race mode.[8] In a third multiplayer mode – Battle Mode – the aim is to defeat the other players by attacking them with power-ups, destroying balloons which surround each kart.[7][9]

Rainbow Road Through the Years

Rainbow Road Through the Years
Rating: 4
A look at Rainbow Road through the years. Rainbow Road first appeared in Super Mario Kart for Super Nintendo (SNES) in 1992. Since then, it has appeared in every Mario Kart game. It also made an appearance in an F-Zero game. One lap of each course is shown in this video, for all of the console versions plus the GBA game. (Sorry, I was not able to include the DS version). The games shown are: 1992 – Super Mario Kart (SNES) 1997 – Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo 64) 1998 – F-Zero X (Nintendo 64) 2001 – Mario Kart: Super Circuit (Game Boy Advance) 2003 – Mario Kart: Double Dash (GameCube) 2008 – Mario Kart Wii Please note that the years listed are based on the North American release. Again, I was unable to include the DS game (I did not forget about it). I do not own a DS system and I do not have the ability to directly capture video from a DS anyway. This video is about the CONSOLE versions of Mario Kart. The GBA game is included as a bonus since it can be played on the GameCube console with the Game Boy Player adapter.

Mario Kart 64, one of the first games released for the Nintendo 64 platform, is an updated translation of the very popular Super Mario Kart for the Super NES (SNES). While the game clearly takes full advantage of the graphic power and speed of the N64, a few components that made the original so compelling have been left out of this release. Still, Nintendo’s expertise at sucking players into the game world is strongly evident, and Mario Kart 64 offers enough challenges to keep players (especially casual gamers) entertained.

Placing a familiar Nintendo personality behind the wheel of a sputtering kart powered by a 50, 100, or 150 cc engine, the game lets players race up to four of Nintendo’s lovable characters on a variety of well-designed tracks. Because karts lack the power and speed of race cars, drivers must focus on collecting power-ups and non-lethal weapons rather than negotiating hairpin turns on two wheels. Grabbing and using on-track items is the heart of the game’s fun: a strategically placed banana peel sends the unlucky victim into a spin, nailing an opponent with a turtle shell launches their vehicle skyward and a rocket provides a quick boost to near-breakneck speeds, if only for a moment. The multiplayer mode provides enormously chaotic fun for up to four players–flip it on at a party and watch the guests congregate around the screen. —Eric Twelker

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! has got to a lot to prove. The original Super Mario Kart on the SNES is still lauded by many as one of the best driving games–and one of the best multi-player games–ever made, but Mario Kart 64 had a less unanimous welcome.

Thankfully, Double Dash!! has got everything right–indeed this is probably the best first-party sequel so far for the GameCube: the graphics are excellent, the power-ups are more insane than ever and most importantly the handling of the karts is excellent, with the powerslide of the SNES original all-important once more.

The big new gimmick for Double Dash!! is the fact that there are customised karts for you to drive, all of which can seat two characters. This ensures a surprising amount of tactical depth as you can switch the characters around mid-race in order to access each one’s unique special weapons. As ever with Nintendo games, the gameplay is perfectly balanced so that the use of power-ups never overshadows the need to be a skilful driver. Indeed, the improved AI of the computer players is immediately noticeable as they move around the tracks in a highly intelligent manner, moving out of your way and blocking you off when necessary.

Of course the real draw with any Mario Kart game is the multi-player mode and this is as insanely enjoyable as ever in either race or battle mode. Indeed it’s better than ever as you can now have up to 16 people playing at one time if you link up your GameCubes using broadband adapters. —David Jenkins
